Find resources from within

If you have ever felt motivated, peaceful, courageous or happy, you can recreate those feelings again during any activity. Because you create your emotions from within, it is simply a case of putting the right ingredients together in the right way; just like cooking from a recipe.

  1. First, you need to know exactly what state you want to accomplish, and how you want to act. Make sure you are focusing on what you do want rather than what you don’t want.
  2. Once you can identify the resource state you want, scan your memory for a context where you had the state. If you can’t remember ever having it, think about another person whom you know has that resource. The person maybe someone you know, or a public figure.
  3. Now, what is it about this state that makes it unique? How does the state feel? How do you perceive your experiences while you are in this state? Do you breathe differently, hold your body in a certain posture or move it in a certain way? Are your actions quick or slow? Get specific about what it means to be in the desired state.
  4. In order for you to trigger the resource state at the right times, you will need to select a signal situation or behaviour. Work out exactly what has to happen for you to adopt the resource state. Perhaps you want to feel motivated whenever you are working at your computer or cleaning the house. If so, the act of turning on the computer or the vacuum cleaner might be the trigger for the motivated state. Or perhaps you want to be more assertive when you speak to your boss. In that case, the sight of your boss would trigger the resource state.
  5. Practise your new association by imagining that you adopted the resource state in past situations when your signal was triggered. Make up new situations and imagine yourself following through in the future.
