Reflect on past perceptions
If you keep making the same mistakes, it may be that you continue to perceive situations in the same way. Unless you acknowledge that the way you perceived and then handled an event in the past was not helpful, it may affect your judgement in the future. In hindsight you may realise that you exaggerated some problems, or ignored signs that you should have paid attention to.
Consider an unpleasant event that happened in the last month. Maybe you had a disagreement with your spouse, a problem occurred at work, you were lied to, stolen from, or maybe you felt unmotivated or lonely.
Ask yourself some questions regarding that event. They may include:
- At the time the event happened, what meaning did I give to it?
- Did I learn any new information after the event that would have changed my view had I known in advance?
- What has the event taught me to do or not to do next time?
- What new, empowering meaning could I give to a similar situation in the future?
